As per UNWTO, there is a huge drop in international travel demand between January-June 2020 into a loss of 440 million international arrivals and about US$ 460 billion in export revenues from international tourism. This is almost 5 times the loss that is recorded in 2009 due to recession.
Europe was the 2nd hardest hit of all global regions, with a 66% decrease in tourist arrivals in the first half of 2020. The Americas (-55%), Africa and the Middle East (both -57%) also suffered.
Asia and the Pacific, the first region to feel the impact of COVID-19 on tourism, was the hardest hit, with a 72% fall in tourists for the six-month period.
As per Mobility Market Outlook on COVID-19, the global revenue for the travel and tourism industry will be around USD 396.37 billion in 2020 – a decrease of around 42.1 % from the previous year. This is lower than the original 2020 forecast of around USD 712 billion.
